Fifteen
No one talked as we drove back to Oliverâs. I stared out the window while the radio played Jesseâs Girl by Rick Springfield. Unlike the ride over, I was in the backseat.
The song was far too bubbly for my mood. I couldnât shake the image of Billyâs death from my memory.
I also couldnât ignore the fact that Billy had likely been killed in the hotelâs attic, not just found there. At some point, I needed to check out that space for clues, but wasnât eager to do it tonight. Or physically able.
Similar to this afternoon, exhaustion tugged at my eyelids and weariness had invaded my bones. Seeing those visions seemed to deplete me in ways even midlife hadnât.
Just my luck. I had a latent power, but it dovetailed nicely with my perimenopause symptoms. Why couldnât my new-found ability leave me with dewy, moisturized skin, or the ability to vanquish hot flashes with a single thought?
âYou okay?â Oliverâs fingers touched the top of my hand, then withdrew. âHowâs your palm?â
The watch had left an angry red blotch on the skin of my left hand. I turned to him. âItâs going to be fine with some ice. I donât know if Iâm okay. It was intense. Like watching a 3-D movie.â
âDid yâall ever see Jaws 3 in 3D?â Sage asked from the driverâs seat.
She and Liz launched into a discussion about it. Turns out it was a popular movie here in town in 1983.
âIâm beyond tired,â I murmured to Oliver.
He nodded. âThatâs to be expected with psychometry. You should take it easy tomorrow. The more intense the vision, the longer it will take you to recover.â
âI donât have time to recover. I need to resolve this spirit situation before the bachelorette party.â Now, however, there was more than simply my own financial needs. I had to think about Billy. How could I not?
âThat poor kid,â I said, repeatedly raking my bottom lip through my teeth. âBilly didnât deserve to die that way.â
âBut you didnât see who killed him?â Oliver asked.
âIt was a guy. I think. The voice sounded garbled. Or it changed in pitch. Maybe thatâs my memory, though. Or the visions arenât completely accurate. Is that possible?â
âIt takes time to use the full range of the ability, from what Iâve read.â
âBilly looked so young. About the age of my own daughter, maybe a little younger.â I sighed. âI wonder what happened that night. Weâve got to find out.â
Liz turned in her seat. âSounds like someone wants to investigate a homicide.â
I groaned and let my head flop back against the seat. âI donât know. We should probably go to the police and give them all our evidence.â
The other three began talking at once, debating whether to bring our discovery to the cops. Apparently, the local police force was in a transition period and the department didnât have much money or resources. The detective division was one guy who had been on the force for decades.
Liz explained that crime was rare in town, what with all the psychics.
